Mark Hamill Feared Avatar: The Last Airbender Was ‘Too Smart’ For TV
Beloved Nickelodeon show “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is an animated series both children and parents can enjoy, as it delivers more mature messages than usual for cartoons.
“Avatar” is known for its intelligent writing and serious subject matter, which led Mark Hamill to believe that the series was doomed in its early days.
Hamill shared, “I remember reading the first script [for ‘Avatar’] thinking, ‘This thing’s gonna get canceled in four episodes 'cuz it’s too smart”; however, the actor was wrong.
Although the series didn’t quite fit in with Nickelodeon’s lineup, which included shows like “Spongebob Squarepants,” “Avatar” was a massive hit with the audience.
Hamill continued, “It was really gratifying to hear that parents like to watch it with their children, 'cuz it talked up to children rather than talking down to them.”
The actor voiced Fire Lord Ozai, the sinister leader of the Fire Nation and Zuko’s father, serving as the series’ ultimate antagonist and a key figure in his son’s redemptive arc.
