Meet Pep Guardiola: Ted Lasso’s Biggest Season 3 Cameo Explained
Spoiler Warning!
This story contains spoilers for
Season 3, Episode 11 of “Ted Lasso.”
“Ted Lasso” uses real locations and teams, but the show has mainly stayed in its own universe — until Josep “Pep” Guardiola’s cameo as the rival coach in the penultimate episode.
After Richmond beats Manchester City, Guardiola tells Lasso, “Don’t worry about wins and losses,” and coaching’s about helping the players be “the best versions of themselves.”
Guardiola, the first big name in football to appear on the show, has been mentioned several times in the series, including as part of Coach Beard’s Total Football presentation.
While he began his career playing for Barcelona under what was known as the Dream Team, Guardiola is perhaps best known for coaching Barcelona.
Guardiola took the Total Football technique he learned as a player to win nearly every title he could with the team, becoming the youngest manager to win the Champions League.
He led Barcelona to win the “treble” — every major title a team can get — and would later lead Bayern Munich to multiple league victories before transferring to Manchester City.
Although the show portrays Guardiola as a Ted-like figure, he’s reportedly far from the character, demonstrating poor sportsmanship at times and an unrelenting drive to win.
