The Dutch Mystery Movie That Landed On Netflix’s Top 10 List
Spoiler Warning!
This story contains spoilers for “Faithfully Yours.”
The Dutch movie “Faithfully Yours” earned a spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list, and even though it's a derivative murder mystery, it’s still pretty entertaining to watch.
In the film, best friends Bodil (Bracha von Doesburgh) and Isabel (Elise Schaap) take a weekend girls' trip to the coast, a jaunt to cover up each other's extramarital flings.
Returning to her beach house after a swim, Bodil discovers signs of a break-in and a pool of blood on the floor. The cops determine the blood belongs to Isabel and question Bodil.
Bodil lies to hide their infidelities, but then Isabel's phone shows up with a photo of her murder. When Bodil’s lover refuses to corroborate her alibi, she becomes a suspect.
The movie’s old-fashionedness is a blessing and a curse: It predictably sets up its mystery, but then throws out a new clue every five minutes to keep audiences on their toes.
The film diligently shifts suspicion from one person to the next — all the way up to the twist ending — but the characters are blank thriller archetypes who only advance the plot.
Bodil and Isabel's pact to have an alibi for each other’s affairs echoes “Strangers on a Train,” and a club scene channels Michael Douglas bumping and grinding in “Basic Instinct.”
The movie’s references draw from a rich seam of psychological thriller heritage, which may be why it’s so popular, providing something comfortingly familiar without nostalgia.
