The Mandalorian Season 3 Kinda Shames Fans For Ignoring Grogu’s Name
Spoiler Warning!
This story contains spoilers for Season 3 of “The Mandalorian.”
It wasn't until midway through Season 2 that fans finally learned that the bundle of joy at the center of “The Mandalorian,” affectionately known as Baby Yoda, is actually named Grogu. While Baby Yoda still reigns supreme among “The Mandalorian” audience, the Season 3 premiere included a stern reminder that despite the Baby Yoda nickname craze, he'll always be Grogu.
In the Season 3 premiere, “The Apostate,” Mando and Grogu return to Nevarro and meet up with Greef Karga, who is now the High Magistrate. Karga calls Grogu, “the little one,” but Mando firmly corrects him, “Grogu. His name is Grogu” — Mando’s clipped tone speaks volumes, as not even the High Magistrate of Nevarro gets to disrespect Grogu's name when Mando is around.
Fans shouldn’t be deterred by the show’s passive-aggressive messaging. “The Mandalorian” creator Jon Favreau gave fans express permission on Good Morning America to refer to Grogu as Baby Yoda, saying, “It’s fine with all of us. We still call him Baby Yoda too, but he prefers to be called 'Grogu', if you notice in the show. He perks up a lot when you say his name.”
